I wanted just to meet Shioda Sensei and train under him, but in those days there was no internet and I had no contact in Japan and no idea how to look for Shioda Sensei`s dojo. Upon graduation from University and a year of compulsory military service in France, I left home for Tokyo, Japan in September 1980. When did you decide to travel and become ‘uchi deshi’ to Master Gozo Shioda? I promised myself to go to Japan and check out this master. There were many videos of famous Japanese and Chinese masters but I was very impressed by this old man of small stature effortlessly throwing and pinning a much bigger partner with grace while laughing. At University in Lyon France, I practiced Kung-Fu and traditional Ju-Jitsu and one day during a Ju-Jitsu seminar I saw for the first time an old 8mm movie of Shioda Gozo Sensei the founder of Yoshinkan Aikido. Since high school I was influenced by Bruce Lee`s movies and attracted by the martial arts. How did you first get involved in the martial arts and Yoshinkan Aikido? I must point out that I have only amended a small amount of Shihan Payet’s original words, because I want the work to be interpreted as if speaking to him direct. He left his native France to train directly under the Aikido legend, Gozo Shioda, and resides there even today. He has a great deal of history and experience which is evident in the ensuing interview. I was delighted when Shihan Jacques Payet agreed to be interviewed by me for the WBDS Newsletter. Interview with Shihan Jacques Payet by Neil Horton. JOSE MIGUEL MARTINEZ BARRERA 9th Dan SPAINīOGDAN KURILKO 6th Dan RUSSIAN FEDERATION I must also point out that all grades must be registered by an authentic and fully recognised organisation and it is inevitable that the size of the Yudanshakai is only going to get bigger, but the quality of the verification process shall not diminish. At a later date, each yudansha will be given a unique reference number purely for the keeping of records. Notifications are only to be received from Godan (5th dan), in view of the sheer number involved. It is also important that should a Yudansha be awarded a higher rank to that detailed below, he or she should inform with both email and evidence at the earliest convenience for records to be amended. All information received from a third party will be dealt with in confidence without any fear of reprisal. The World Budo Development Society also reserves the right to remove any named individual where questions arise about their authenticity or code of conduct. The World Budo Development Society totally supports the rank/grade level given and officially upholds the named individuals qualifications. The following named martial artists have been verified as legitimate and authentic holders of yudansha (black belts). Once a master has been approved all ranks and grades he/she has issued will automatically be accepted too. The said database will be open for anyone that would like to gain information and to establish the list of yudansha that have been formally verified. The goal is to verify or validate the existing ranks/grades of martial artists throughout the world and to be recognised and recorded on a database. The process has been created to identify true graded masters from those that have no claim to their authenticity. With this in mind, the WBDS is to establish an ongoing Yudansha Verification Process with the assistance of some of the world’s foremost and respected martial arts masters. The World Budo Development Society ( 世界武道開発協会) was established to be free from politics and discrimination and open to all practicing martial artists. World Budo Development Society YUDANSHAKAI.
